What are we breeding for?

Short answer: Russian Dove Agouti and Russian Blue Agouti Fancy Rats

We select our rats for breeding based on a number of factors. Most importantly, temperament (nice, friendly, confident rats), Health (breeding away from health issues, towards healthier and more robust rats), Type (athletic, toned and agile rats)

In terms of varieties, I have listed our plans in further depth below.

Russian Dove Agouti

NFRS Guide Standard: A blend of warm pinky grey ticking over a light fawn ground. Heathering of the ticking is normal for this variety and not a fault, Undercolour grey to the skin, foot colour to be grey, belly colour light silver. Eyes black.

Genetics in Russian Dove Agouti's can be variable, see the helpful write up by Hawthorn Rats here: http://ratvarieties.com/russian-dove-agouti

At Marigold Rats, we are striving to have mink + chocolate RDA's. In our opinion the 'pinky' colour that we like is prettiest in this combination and we hope to achieve this by selective breeding with the rats that exhibit this pinky grey ticking.

Marigold Katinka Ingaborgovinana, Russian Dove Agouti

Russian Blue Agouti

NFRS Standard: A blend of dark blue ticking over a fawn ground. Heathering of the blue ticking is normal for this variety and is not a fault. Undercolour to be dark blue down to the skin. Foot colour to be silvery grey. Belly colour silver. A brown tinge to the ticking to be considered a fault. Coat to be short and thick- a long coat or a coat similar to that on other varieties (excluding rex) to be a serious fault. Eyes black.
